Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival presents the North American Premiere of Hex by director Maja Holland.
As part of a pact to explore their inner witches, Norwegian performance artists Johanna, Nikoline and Victoria form a black-metal band called Witch Club Satan, despite having no musical experience nor being able to play any instruments. What they do have is great screaming voices, songs about their periods and plenty of female rage to unleash. The band quickly becomes a feminist beacon in the otherwise male-dominated and exclusionary black-metal music scene. On their way to Europe-wide success, they manage to enchant some and offend others with their topless, ritualistic performances. Structured around a mock witch trial, Hex intersperses observational scenes and spiritual rituals with court testimony by members of the Norwegian music community, each offering their hot take on this unique overnight success story.
