TORONTO SILENT FILM FESTIVAL presents a screening of HÄXAN: WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES.

Scandalous and notorious in the annals of film history… not fully a horror film, not a strict documentary, but a tale of the cultural history of witchcraft from centuries past to the “modern” age. The director draws an arc from the early cultures of Persia & ancient Egypt to the 19th Century, disclosing the history of the motives of the devil, demons, and the witches and sets up the audiences for the story of modern social criticism. Throughout, dream sequences are seamlessly interwoven with documentary type material.

You’ll also have the rare opportunity to hear it with the same original music, just like the premiere audience heard it but with a modern recording with the Czech Orchestra.

HÄXAN is the first part of TSFF’s The Flesh & The Devil, a screening series exploring the exotic, erotic, banned, controversial and scandalous films of the 1920s.
